Indian Troop Ship – Stranding Only – DCC: 10/01/1884 “NAVAL ENQUIRY – When the SERAPIS, Indian troop ship, was on her passage to Portsmouth on the 26th December 1883, she touched the Shambles, off Portland, but fortunately without sustaining any damage, the engines having been reversed, and the big troop ship at once got off. A court of enquiry was held on Thursday on board the DUKE OF WELLINGTON, flag ship at Portsmouth, to ascertain if any blame attached to the officers or crew. It was conducted by Captain Rowley, of the flag ship, Captain Markham, of the VERNON, and Captain Hare, of the VALOROUS. The investigation was private and at the close the Court drew up a report for the consideration of the Lords of the Admiralty.”
